Damn right, I'm a fangirl!

At least where LoTR is concerned. For as long as I can remember. And proud of it. :D
They got the important award, and that was Best Score. No contest.
Anyway... about the McKellan-related award, I'm less peeved about it now. Maybe it would have bothered me less if the guy that *got* the award in that category had been someone I'd even *heard* of, from a movie I recognized.
Whenever a previously-unheard-of something-or-other sweeps the award out from under something I was rooting for, I wonder... is it just that I don't get out enough (which given where I am, is entirely possible), or am I right and do large portions of Hollywood currently suck?
Hmm...

You're right...
... large portions of Hollywood do suck. :)

Iris is a British film, about Dame Iris Murdoch, a writer and philosopher who developed Altzheimer's. Jim Broadbent (the actor who received the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor) played her husband, a typical English eccentric intellectual, the kind of person who makes you wonder how he ever manages in the modern world. It falls to him to care for his wife as she gradually loses her mind - eventually she can barely talk, and all those wonderful words that she lived for were lost.

I went and saw this film here in Wodonga (ye gods!) with my mum and a friend of hers, and I sobbed pretty much through from the half-way mark. If you could see Broadbent's brilliant acting, the emotion he brings to the role, you'd understand why he got the Oscar. Keep an eye out for this one at independant cinemas or the cult section of the video library, eventually. It's a must-see, if a bit harrowing.

Re: You're right...
I figured it was going to be Maggie Smith for best actress... but then I realised... oh right, she was in Gosford Park... How the hell did that win best screenplay? That was crap. Oh well, at least it didn't win best director... wouldn't have surprised me though. How did he even get nominated for best director? He just sat there and waited to see what the actors gave him!
