Today is the first day of 14valentines. This story is only sort about today's theme, and by "sort of" I mean "I started over here and then I wandered off over there somewhere because they simply would not shut up." Honest to god, I have no idea what happened. It started out as a Teyla Learns About Earth And Is Not Always Pleased story, and ended up as the Rodney And Teyla Have Girl Talk story. (Because in my head, Rodney and Teyla have girl talk all the time.)

If you'd like to read a thoughtful essay on Body Image, you should probably just go over to the comm. ;)

I've signed up for two days of this - let's see if I actually finish the other one. (Magic 8 Ball says: Outlook Not Good.)

The Words That Bind | PG | ~4,400

ETA: you can also read this story on my website.

Betaed by artemisiabrisol. Spoilers up to... The Shrine, I suppose?

Can a person's life be whittled down to so narrow a pinpoint, that a moment's glimpse could comprise all pride, love, yearning, passion? How? Teyla knows that this is a thing of vision, ofsight, of the brief scattershot communion Earth people seem to have with anyone outside of a handful of those tied to them by blood and long-term circumstance.Collapse )

What a wonderful look into Teyla, her background and her perspective on Earth culture. I love the relationship you've drawn between Rodney and Teyla. Poignant and lovely!

This is very beautiful.
I should listen to Teyla--she is better than the voices I usually hear.
To your Teyla, no-one is a "before."

Yay! Teyla! She's definitely someone who wouldn't stand for that nonsense. I like the way you write her--complex and thoughtful.

This is just absolutely gorgeous. Not only the alien perspective on Earth, or Teyla - God, your strong, proud, smart lovely Teyla - but the sheer affection between her and Rodney that imbues this piece, makes warm where it could solely be sharp. Like Shrek, this fic has layers.

Mmm,lovely written peice. I love Teyla in this, and Rodney too. Beautiful characterization of them both.

I rarely read any gen in this fandom, rarely read fic that doesn't focus on Rodney and John, but I'm glad I read this one. I love the friendship Teyla and Rodney share, and I love that they talk like this (because, yes, they do in my head, too). Thank you for sharing it. :)

Very nice. And I love how you adressed that Teyla's mother was the leader before her. I pretty much think that calling the baby Torren was a gaffe on the writers part, but the rewrite was such an awesome way to challenge our perceptions, that I wish they'd done it on purpose. Because when Teyla limited her lineage to one parent 'ea. the important one', we collectively assumed it was her father and I for one never even considered that her mother might have been the leader. It might just be because Tagaan doesn't sound very feminine to our ears, but I doubt it.

And the outsiders view of our society worked really well. Especially Teyla's realization that Rodney was also affected by it. Let's face it. Even if you never touch one of those mags, you still get bombarded with the golden standard every day.
