Dear Governor Schwarzenegger.

Fuck you and your Hollywood-centric rhetoric. Fuck your stated intentions to remove US film production from Vancouver on the basis of "returning needed jobs to California" when we in the Lower Mainland glean about one-fifteenth of what Hollywood makes every year. Fuck your attempt to pull Terminator 3 from production because of the location. Fuck your assertion that *our* lifeblood is somehow damaging your precious economy. Fuck your completely terrifying campaign. And most of all, fuck your creepy Public Smile. Stop that. >.<

We are just so screwed. Campbell's in cahoots with Klein, the dollar's gone up, and now this. Oi.

*ahem* Right. I was doing something else...

(No offense meant to any of my beloved Californians. I plead total ignorance of Californian politics. I just really hate this whole Arnold thing. ;)

We actually a quarter of all "Hollywood" movies are made in Canada. That's quite a few!

Yeah, but the majority of the revenue *still* goes back to the U.S. Those numbers I quoted are relatively accurate, albeit a little optimistic. Hollywood made about 14.6 billion (American dollars) on movies last year - Vancouver made 1.3 (CAD). And Arnold claims they need to snatch back even that measly fraction, because, I assume, *he* didn't make enough money last year. I guess twenty million just doesn't go as far as it used to. >.

Non taxable too, no? Isn't that the way it goes in the States? Once you make over a half a million, you don't pay taxes?

The reason that movies are made in Canada, are because we have good people, and it's cheaper, than the US. If the Terminator wants to stop productions from coming to Canada, he'd have to offer huge tax incentives. Giving huge tax breaks to one of the richer industries while the state deficit is so huge will happen shortly before the next recall election. I have a feeling that if you want to get votes for a right wing candidate in an industry that is notoriously left wing, you say such things to make them happy, weather you plan on actually doing it or not.

I understand that the big tax breaks were part of his platform, though I admit I wasn't paying much attention to the election until I saw last night that he'd won. *nausea*
There have been, though, a lot of movements over the last couple of years by the U.S. federal government, by the California state government, and by the (and this part shames me deeply) Screen Actor's Guild, to move movie production back onto U.S. soil. There have, in fact, been several tax benefits offered previously to some production companies, albeit quietly, though I can't cite an example off the top of my head. This has been going on a while. This is just the newest level of scary. As if BC didn't have enough problems already... o.O
