Oh, gods...

My mum just called to wake me up. She said: "Turn on the TV." I said: "Why?"
She said: "The US is bombing Afghanistan."
Oh, gods.
Bush is living it up. I feel cold.
What I need to know is what's going on down South - come on, 'Merkins, what's going on?

Re: "Patriotism"
Yeah; I saw that infrared thing. We get all the 'Merkin channels up here, too.
I had a rather heated discussion with my Mum this morning - didn't last long. But she's supporting this. I'm not disputing the need for retaliation, and I don't really
have any solid alternatives in mind, but this... this does not feel right. It feels... it brings foreboding with it. I watched the news for fifteen minutes, and finally I couldn't bear the twin atmospheres of slimy smugness and blind "patriotism", as it's being presented. And
now I feel sick.
I don't know - I guess I really thought that this whole thing was a fear tactic - the destruction in New York and DC was a push of a domino - it's not as if they really *need* to do anything more - we're doing it ourselves. *shakes head* I remember my sisters telling me once
about a fireworks display in Disneyland, the last time they went. I guess it was an Independence Day thing. But they told me it was patriotic in such a... I guess *violent* is the only word I could use to describe it... way, that they asked my parents if they could go back to the hotel.
It's downright Orwellian, as my friend Nadja would say.
*shudders*
It's Thanksgiving Day in Canada tomorrow. How ironic.

Aye... The other thing that popped into my head today is that a large number of cars, at least on the east coast, have American flags on their antennas, some at half-mast. If I weren't an American (and thus used to it), I think I would find how often we display our flag a bit disturbing.
Hmm.
