Amazon Ranking (apparently a new verb)

So I've got the roomies out in Ridge at my Mum's for Easter. We came in from egg-hunting (in the rain - makes you strong) and sat down to lunch, at which point I pulled out Maddy to check my F-list, and saw that Amazon had lost its tiny mind.

"Hey," I said to artemisiabrisol. "Look at this!"

We bent over the computer. "WTF!" said she.

And we looked up the contact number for Amazon.ca. (This was slightly creepy. Apparently you enter your phone number into a box and click a button, and the house phone immediately rings. That was kind of spooky.)

At which point artemisiabrisol used her Librarian Powers to cow them into submission. (Something along the lines of how she'd spent thousands of dollars on their site but wouldn't be doing it any longer, nor, as a Future Librarian, would any institution she worked for. Librarian Powers GO!)

The Amazon Lackey quickly explained it was being fixed, e.g. "We're working on it right now and we're terribly sorry for the inconvenience!"

We gather they've been getting a lot of negative feedback. Oops. :)

I think I need a Library Fu icon. ^.^

More on Amazon Fail

The Amazon Rank fiasco has so far sparked the fastest torches-and-pitchforks reaction I've ever actually seen LJers muster (with the disclaimer that we didn't hear about this until this morning). Go us. *thumbs up*

Dear Amazon: even for a corporation for your size, it's a special kind of stupid when you tell one customer it's a glitch and another that it's part of a new Adult policy.

Amazon.com's current top search results for "homosexuality":

1. A Parent's Guide to Preventing Homosexuality by Joseph Nicolosi and Linda Ames Nicolosi

2. You Don't Have to Be Gay: Hope and Freedom for Males Struggling With Homosexuality or for Those Who Know of Someone Who Is by Jeff Konrad

Amazon.ca's current top search results for "homosexuality":

1. Someday This Pain Will Be Useful To You by Peter Cameron

2. The Gay Man's Kama Sutra by Terry Sanderson

I'm not sure what this means just now, just that it makes me feel slightly less Rage-Murder-Kill for the time being and I'm gonna hang onto that for a while.

For those of you who haven't yet communicated your outrage, artemisiabrisol has compiled a handy-dandy list of customer service numbers for your easy access. When we went looking for the contact number this morning it took us ten minutes and a login to find. o.O

Here, have a disapproving proto-Librarian. Channel her in your telephone calls. (I admit, I link this mainly because it makes me giggle. Also because I am not yet officially in Library Fu Training and do not have a Disapproving Librarian picture of my own.)

In less interesting IRL news, Easter Zombie Jesus dinner was delicious and filling, and Mum's first attempt at making trifle was voted a success. We only got a little wet hunting for chocolate, but as my sisters and I explained to the Albertans, Easter egg hunting in BC is an endurance activity. You have to prove you really deserve it. :)

Finally, I'm still getting "Cannot Contact Server" when I try and post via client. It's not my firewall, I'm pretty sure it's not a proxy problem, and LJ seems to be up and running... WTF?
